An approach to combine generative urbanism and soundscape simulation and auralization

This paper presents a novel methodology integrating generative urban design techniques with advanced soundscape simulation and auralization. We demonstrate how procedural city generation can be coupled with acoustic propagation models to create immersive sonic environments for urban planning.

(01) Methodology

The approach uses the DeCodingSpaces Toolbox for Grasshopper and the open-source Pynamic framework. Generative algorithms create urban layouts while auralization provides real-time auditory feedback.

(02) Implementation

We developed a prototype system that allows planners to hear the acoustic consequences of their design choices in real-time, enabling iterative refinement.

(03) Results

Preliminary testing with urban planners shows promise for more holistic city design that considers both visual aesthetics and acoustic comfort.
